Taking care of your cabinets can increase their lifespan greatly.

We are certainly aware of the numerous stresses associated with purchasing a new home or when undergoing renovations. We are confident that when you settle in to your new surroundings, you will begin to enjoy the beauty and warmth of your new cabinetry for years to come. There are many important things to know to ensure that your Delton Cabinets stay looking their best.

WOOD SURFACES

Colour and grain variations are natural characteristics of authentic wood surfaces. Since no two trees are exactly alike, these variations are evident in every piece of real wood. Natural variations are softened somewhat by the application of toners and stains. These finish applications are not designed to eliminate, but to enhance the charm and unique characteristics of the natural wood. Although great care is taken to match colour and pattern, some variation must always be expected due to the nature of the various wood species. Using the following care suggestions will ensure the longest possible service and beauty of the high-quality finish applied by Delton Cabinets to your cabinets.

CLEANING

Only use clean, soft cloths when cleaning your cabinets. Clean all surfaces with a damp cloth, drying immediately with a dry cloth. Mild, lemon-based soap and water applied with a clean cloth can be used to remove oil, grease or other material from the surface. All soap residues should be rinsed from the surface using a clean, damp cloth. To maintain the beauty of your cabinets, care for them as you would any piece of fine furniture. Wax is not recommended on finished wood surfaces.

SCRATCHES AND NICKS

These can be eliminated or hidden by using a touch-up colour marker on shallow scratches, or by using a matching wood-tone putty stick on deeper scratches or nicks. Touch-up markers and putty sticks are available from Delton Cabinets.

THINGS TO AVOID

Do not wipe your cabinets with a dishcloth. A dishcloth can contain soap, grease and other agents that can be detrimental to the finished surface. Do not use detergents, strong soap, abrasive cleaners or self-polishing waxes which can also be harmful to the finish. Keep the finished surfaces dry.

Excessive moisture is an enemy of any finish or wood product. Do not allow water or other liquids to be in contact with cabinet surfaces for prolonged periods of time. Water will eventually be absorbed by the wood and cause swelling. Steam from kettles or dishwashers should be directed away from the underside of cabinets or the bottom edge of doors. This could eventually affect the adhesion of the edge-banding and may also dull the finish. Dampness next to dishwashers, sinks and toe kick areas can cause finish damage and eventual damage to the underlying wood if not dried as it occurs.

MOISTURE CONTENT AND SETTLING

Our wood products are manufactured from raw materials with a moisture content consistent with Building and Construction Standards – generally in the 6% to 8% range. In some instances, a new home may have an initial moisture content of 15% to 25%. Some of this excess moisture may be transferred to the cabinetry.

It is common for some buildings to settle onto their new foundations during the initial months of occupancy. Occasionally, this settling may cause some minor alignment changes with the cabinetry – often easily adjusted at the hinges.

LAMINATE AND LACQUER SURFACES

Cabinets with laminate and lacquer surfaces are manufactured using materials that are designed for easy care. Years of service and beauty can be maintained by following these easy suggestions.

INTERIOR SURFACES

The standard interior on Delton's cabinets is a non-absorbent melamine surface that resists scuffing, marring and repels most household spills. Cabinets with finished wood interiors are protected by a hard, cured finish that is extremely durable. To clean either of these surfaces, simply wipe with a damp cloth or sponge and dry thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth.

LAMINATE COUNTERTOPS

Laminate countertops are warrantied by their manufacturer to be free of defect in materials and workmanship. Please be advised that the miter joint(s) should be protected from accumulated or prolonged moisture as this will often cause excessive swelling at the joint. Miter joints are NOT guaranteed against swelling or separation caused by moisture.
